Team Parkinson at San Francisco Marathon sets new record!

There is always optimism each year as we gear up for the next race, but little did we know that this, our 8th year in San Francisco, would be a record-breaker for our Bay Area team!  So far our 2010 SF Marathon team members have raised over $80,000, and counting!  I must start this recap with a huge THANK YOU to all our team members and their families and supporters!

Race weekend started out with the two-day Marathon Expo at the SF Concourse Expo Center in the South of Market area.   Joining me in the Team P booth once again were John and Edna Ball, founders of Team Parkinson, and Carol Walton, CEO of The Parkinson Alliance.  We also had a special guest with us for the weekend - Christopher Pearsall, Representing Solvay Pharmaceuticals, now Abbott.  He brought with him Solvay’s “Messages of Hope” wall, which is designed to help bring members of the Parkinson’s community together through messages of encouragement and hope.  Chris was a delight to work with, and took photos of many of the team members, and others who came by our booth at the Expo.

The Expo was followed on Saturday night by our team dinner, held this year at Castagnola’s Restaurant in Fisherman’s Wharf.  This was a great new venue for us, and with over 80 in attendance this year, it is a place we can have room to grow in for the future!   Our special guest speaker that evening was Dr. J. William Langston, Founder, CEO and Scientific Director of the Parkinson’s Institute in Sunnyvale.  Dr. Langston and his wife Lisa had attended last year as well and we were privileged to have them back and hear Dr. Langston speak about some of the current research and initiatives taking place for Parkinson’s.

My favorite part of the weekend is spending time with our team members and families, and it was so wonderful to meet some of the new families who have now joined our Team P community – the Cornwells, the Warmerdams and the Parkinsons!

At the dinner we once again awarded Amy Driscoll our grand prize as top individual fundraiser, with over $10,000 raised! Amy’s family (Team Driscoll-Durling) as a whole raised over $17,000 this year!   I must also recognize Team Beetlebaum and captain Shannon Murphy- Cornwell, they raised over $11,000!  Congratulations and many thanks to all of our teams and individual fundraisers for all of your efforts on behalf of Team Parkinson this year!

I’d also like to thank our premiere sponsor Solvay Pharmaceuticals, now Abbott, and our dinner sponsor Norm Reeves Honda Superstore for their support.  By helping to offset any overhead costs they insure that the money everyone raises through these events can all go to Parkinson’s research!

On race morning, our full and first half-marathoners were out on the course early before sunrise!   I met up with those walking and running the 5k near the start line around 7:30am and we worked our way out on the scenic course along the Embarcadero in our bright blue Team P shirts!

After the 5K, we set up our cheering section close to the finish line, near Red’s Java house and cheered in our full and second half marathoners, staying out until all of our Team P athletes had come by!  Everyone finished their chosen distances and it was a great day for all!

Thanks again to you all, and we hope you can join us next July 31st, 2011 for next year’s SF Marathon!
