Getting to Know Diane Shatswell - 06/25/2012

Which SF Marathon event are you signed up for?
I will be doing my first-ever Progressive Marathon.

Why/who you run for?
I am walking both for and with my daughter who was diagnosed with Young Onset Parkinson's last year. She is working so hard to not let Parkinson's overtake her life and I figured the least I could do was walk 26 miles with her. Our "unofficial official training motto" has been "Suck it up, Buttercup," and I found a place online where I could have that embossed on a pair of silicone bracelets for us to wear.

Story about the person you are running for/anything else you want others to know about this person.
My daughter Elizabeth was 26 when she got her diagnosis, and almost from the start she has worked so hard to keep a positive outlook on her life. She just started a support group because she could not find one geared toward younger people, and one that provides a very positive outlook. She does not want to focus on what she can no longer do, but wants to share the things she can still do, and ways she's found to modify the 'can'ts' into 'cans'. I could not be more proud of her, and she truly has become an inspiration to me.
